Treatment Options for Uterine Fibroid Tumors

Usually when women enter menopause, the biggest fear they have is getting tumors in the uterus. Previously hysterectomy was the preferred treatment for these tumors as there was a fear that the tumors might turn malignant at some point of time in the future. Even today around 600,000 hysterectomies are performed each year in the United States.
However, today women do not have to opt for hysterectomy as there are a number of other treatments available that are not as extreme as hysterectomy.
Here are some treatment options for uterine tumors other than hysterectomy:
o Uterine Artery Embolization: This procedure is also known as UAE and involves cutting the blood vessels that supply blood to the fibroid tumors. Once this procedure is done, the tumors start shrinking and they gradually disappear.
o Focused Ultrasound Surgery: This procedure uses high frequency sound waves to kill the tumors. This treatment is not offered to women who have multiple fibroid tumors or to women who have large sized tumors. In addition, women who want to get pregnant in the future should not opt for this procedure. It has been seen that women who have fibroid tumors invariably have normal pregnancies with no complications.
o Lupron Depot: This is a GnRH agonist and works in two separate phases. In the first phase, it stimulates the ovaries to produce estradiol and in phase two, Lupron Depot releases messenger hormones that signal the ovaries to reduce the production of estrogen significantly. This reduction in estrogen causes the fibroid tumors to shrink. It is an accepted treatment for endometriosis and fibroid tumors in the uterus.
