The Rhinoplasty Nose Packaging Process

Prospective plastic surgery recipients are often apprehensive about proceeding with a particular procedure as a result of the pain which could be involved. Rhinoplasty surgeries are no exception. Patients who elect to undergo this procedure are often fearful of the packaging process wherein the surgeon envelops the nose following the surgery. While the installation of the packaging is not painful, the removal of the protective apparatus sometimes is. It turns out that the process is not as painful as many make it out to be. It should not be a sufficient reason for patients to avoid receiving this procedure.
Rhinoplasty surgeons are often asked about the packaging process by fearful patients. It is actually one of the predominant questions doctors receive in consulting with prospective patients. This goes to show how much misinformation pertaining to the procedure has been spread left and right. It makes little sense for people to discourage others from receiving the procedure simply because their experience didn’t go as hoped.
Most patients have fallen under the assumption that every rhinoplasty recipient must have his or her nose packaged. This is simply not true. When the internal portion of the nose remains untouched, packaging is usually not required. In procedures where adjustments are made to the internal structure of the nose, to improve a patient’s breathing or something similar in nature, packaging may be required.
Since the majority of Rhinoplasty procedures are focused on simply improving the aesthetic appeal of a patient’s nose, most people have nothing to worry about. Packaging is usually not an issue in these cases.
In cases in which it is used, nasal packaging is designed to either limit bleeding amidst surgery or in a post-surgical setting, or return the lining of the septum to its initial position. The latter is only required in rhinoplasties aimed at improving the functionality of the nose. Such procedures do not account for the majority of rhinoplasty treatments as a whole.
Once the septum lining is adjusted, it must be pushed against the bone to regain contact. However, surgeons have been able to mitigate the use of packaging in such procedures by attaching the septum lining to the bone through a process dubbed quilting, in which the lining is sown in place. Since the patient is under anesthesia, no pain is experienced.
We hope this article has provided some sense of comfort to those hoping to undergo this exciting procedure. The true nature of this procedure is often skewed and as a result not everybody reaps the benefits it has to offer. There is little reason to fear the packaging aspect of the rhinoplasty procedure as it is not always required. Technology has enabled surgeons to eradicate its necessity.
If you have any further concerns dealing with other aspects of this procedure, they are best directed at your doctor during your consultation. You should ask as many questions as necessary to get a good idea as to whether or not a rhinoplasty is for you. You can also learn a great deal about your particular surgeon’s knowledge and experience in administering this procedure.
