Panic Attacks While Sleeping: How Does It Happen?

The mind is such a powerful thing, so powerful that it does not stop working. Just like the heart, they work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Even if we sleep, there is no sleeping to these two. For this reason, panic attack may even get you while you sleep. One may refuse to believe this fact but they cannot do anything about it. It is the reality of things.

To refresh our minds about panic attack, authorities define it as a sudden “period of intense fear and discomfort.” This fear that is felt with panic attack is not normal. This is not the fear that you will be late for the exams or the fear of being bitten by ants but this is an “intense fear”, something that when it happens, you feel like struggling between life and death.

Symptoms of panic attacks are many. To enumerate some, we have the “racing heart”, dizziness, trembling, nausea, sweating, difficulty of breathing, and many others. These symptoms are also present with other diseases which are not part of anxiety disorder. This is why it is imperative that one must be sure whether it is panic attack or not to eliminate the possibility of a more harmful or dangerous disease.

Back to the main topic of sleep panic attack, we cannot blame a person if he finds it hard to believe that such a disorder can happen even in sleep. Again, this is real. It is even always depicted in movies. For sure you have seen a scene that goes when the actor wakes up straight from his bed, full of sweat, trembling, and gasping for air. This gives us a lot of panic attack symptom in one scene. And do not think that it is fiction because they got it from what is real.

Sometimes, there is a question of how many time sleep panic attacks occur. There is no knowing to this yet. The point is it happens even in our sleep. The question would rather be, “why?”

There are some reasons for these sleep panic attacks. It could be directly of what happened during that day. Maybe a big even carrying a big amount of stress occurred. Take for example a huge bidding process of your company and you did not win, surely this will stir up something in you. Especially when you have no way to let it out, more probably, sleep panic attack will happen in the evening. It could also be due to a dramatic change in your life; a new job, a new baby, or even death in the family. And of course, it could also happen if you are thinking and worrying too much what if panic attack will happen again while you sleep.

At times, sleep panic attack may not really happen the way it does in movies but instead you will feel very tired upon waking up. This is really bad since it is like a double edge sword; you did not get enough rest which will give you stress which may trigger another attack and you might be afraid of sleeping again.

Sleep panic attacks happen. This is the reality. But even if it does, make it a point that this must not occur to you, or else complication would happen next.
