Do you wish you could stop stammering by yourself? Without the help from speech therapists and pathologists to form a treatment plan? There are really only two things you have to remember. First, you must change the attitude, feelings and perceptions towards your stammer. Number two, your abnormal behavior connected to the stutter needs to be changed.

To modify your feelings, perceptions and attitudes, you have to lessen, if not eliminate, your fears of public speaking, of mingling in social circles, and of being the subject of ridicule. In other words, you need to overcome your avoidance of situations where you will be expected to speak, whether as part of a group or as the guest speaker in a national convention.

As a matter of fact, you need to make a real effort, as often as you can, to speak out. To stop stammering, more often than not practice is a great way. As an example, use one of your daily activities like coffee break at work, as an opportunity to practice your speech patterns.

You can even include something as mundane as asking for directions from a stranger to ease your anxiety about speaking to others. And loving yourself enough and possessing sufficient self-confidence will definitely go a long way towards complete recovery!

On the other hand, changing abnormal behaviors associated with your stammering takes more effort although it is very effective in self-therapy. You have to know the primary and secondary behaviors that manifest themselves whenever you stammer.

Included in these behaviors are blocks, repetitions and prolongations(primary) as well as use of filler words like “ah” and “you know”, head jerks and loss of eye contact (secondary). What you need to do is taking control over these behaviors.

For example, to stop stammering while talking to superiors, you can gather your thoughts before speaking them out. Speak slowly and clearly and maintain eye contact all throughout. You also need to consciously control your speech patterns particularly the use of filler words.

In fact, the road down to stop stammering can be reduced to two things: changing your mental attitude and taking control over your physical behavior. In time, you will find that your speech patterns will be normal.
