A lot of people, especially teenagers and young people, view dark skin caused by tans to be nice. As nice as the idea seems, the medical community has done sufficient studies to show that being in the sun for a while can harm your skin, even cause skin cancer. If having a healthy skin is your goal, then being in the sun, exposed, may be detrimental to your health.
The UV rays of the sun can cause sunburn. By being exposed to the sun for extended periods of time, the top layer of our skin is penetrated by UV rays. This creates the darkening pigment on the skin which we call a tan. Although tans may look great when you are still young, too much tanning can lead to the appearance of aging spots. Tanned skin can allude to false illusions of healthy skin so make sure to never be in direct sunlight for more than a few minutes.
Long term exposure to the sunlight leaves your skin unable to replace the burned cells with healthful skin cells, since the DNA is damaged. In turn this can cause wrinkles, dark patches and uneven colour. In fact, it may even lead to skin cancer since fresh skin cells cannot be reproduced.
You should protect your skin from sunlight as much as possible. When the sun at its brightest, the middle of the day, you should avoid it! At the very least, wear long sleeve shirts or other types of protective clothing. Also, you may apply sunscreen lotion every 20 minutes of sunlight exposure.
It is important to understand that exposure to the sun is essential to produce Vitamin D. However, 5-15 minutes of exposure should be enough. Anything more and you risk damaging your skin. Remember to wear long sleeved shirts and to carry and apply sunscreen whenever possible. Following these tips can help your skin in the short and long term!
