One of the techniques of Traditional Chinese Medicine that is very close to Acupressure is Acupuncture. Acupuncture helps in curing diseases and in maintaining good health and a state of wellbeing. Free flowing energy is the key to good health according to this technique so what it tries to do is to stimulate the energy points so the qi or chi flows again. The exterior surface of the human body has 365 acupuncture points across 14 main meridians.

Acupuncture needles are inserted or acupressure applied at specific sites on the meridians which stimulate and release blocked chi and reestablish free energy flow. Take the time to visualize having to remove obstacles that are blocking a river’s flow so that it is able to freely flow again. Acupuncture is also used to control the pace of chi that sometimes flows very fast or very slow.

The needles were found in the late Shang Dynasty archeological digs and it can be seen that for at least 4000 years China has been practicing this type of medicine. Acupuncture is of three kinds: traditional Yin/Yang Theory, Five Elements and the Western or medical acupuncture. Though the diagnostic approach used by all the three methods is similar, the causes attributed to the illness and the treatment of the illness varies from one method to the other.

As the name suggests Five Element Acupuncture follows the five element cycle of Chinese medicine and it also takes the relationship between the mind and body seriously in the diagnosis of illnesses as much as the physical causes. Based on this, it believes that physical cure can be achieved only by removing the mental stress first.

Five elements method is a slow process as it does not merely treat the symptoms but the reason behind the illness due to which the process takes a longer period of time to achieve full recovery. The old yin/yang theory of acupuncture mainly concentrates in bringing back the entire balance of the yin and yang in the human body. Simultaneous stimulation of more than one element is achieved by stimulating the different acupuncture points on different meridians together.

The Western Acupuncture methods are faster and the period of treatment is not very long - this form of treatment is a combination of both western and eastern practices. Among the two categories of medical benefits of Acupuncture, the first type, Anesthetic Acupuncture finds its place in surgeries and dental procedures. Again it is used as a temporary pain reliever or as an analgesic for immediate effect.

Reputable medical research has found it to be effective in treating depression, allergies, asthma, arthritis, infertility, gynecological disorders, migraines and high blood pressure. As with healing methods dealing with energy, acupuncture effectively heals conditions not treatable with conventional treatment, persistent conditions and disorders and maladies arising due to lifestyles.
