Drug Therapies for ADHD

Many families have become more aware of the problem of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). As the incidents of children with ADHD increases, more and more families may be stressed to find that a family member suffers from ADHD.
Common drugs used for treating ADHD include amphetamines, atomoxetin, methylphenidate drugs, and dextroamphetamines. These drugs are known by brand names like Adderall, Ritalin, Concerta, Wellbutrin, Methylin, Focalin XR, Metadate CD, Vivanse, and Strattera. The only non-stimulant among these drugs for treatment of ADHD is Strattera.
One of the most commonly prescribed drugs for ADHD is Ritalin. Ritalin is a methylphenidate, which has been proven in scientific studies to be reliable in the treatment of ADHD. Unfortunately, some parents who have used this drug in the treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder report the drug only seemed to irritate aggression and other adverse symptoms associated with ADHD.
Another commonly used drug for ADHD is Concerta. Concerta is also a methylphenidate. Unlike Ritalin and other methylphenidates the makers of Concerta have developed a time release technology that administers a steady dose of methylphenidate throughout the day.
Adderall is also a drug commonly used in the treatment of ADHD. Adderall is a combination of amphetamines and dextroamphetamines. It is sometimes called “Amphetamine Mixed Salts.” This medication is available in both tablet and pill form.
Sometimes stimulants do not work in the treatment of ADHD. In cases such as these Strattera may be prescribed. If Strattera, the only non-stimulant among common ADHD medications, doesn’t work the doctor may then choose to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder with antihypertensive drugs.
Scientific and clinical studies have shown these drugs to be effective in the treatment of ADHD. There is no denying, however, that there are a number of incidences of side effects linked with the intake of these medications. Most side effects are mild, but severe adverse effects have been experienced by some individuals using these medications.
If your child is currently on medication for ADHD but is troubled by side effects, you may want to try ADHD alternative treatments. When switching to alternative treatments, it is helpful to consult your child’s doctor before trying alternative treatment for ADHD.
