Breastfeeding Benefits - Babies aren’t the only ones who benefit!

Most people know that breast is best for baby, however they may not be aware that breastfeeding benefits the mother and all of us as a whole. Breastfeeding is something that your body has been preparing for during the entire pregnancy, and should be seen as a natural continuation of the birth process. In the following article, I will give you information on what the benefits of breastfeeding are.
How breastfeeding benefits babies:
* When you give birth, the first substance that your breasts produce is called, colostrum. Besides having huge amounts of antibodies, colostrum provides protein and fat in the right amounts. Antibodies is just something that you will never find in formula! Because babies are born with immune systems that do not function at top-notch, they require all the protection they can get from these antibodies. Another important factor with colostrum is that it helps clear the meconium from your baby’s intestines as observed in your baby’s first bowel movement. Within approximately forty-eight to seventy-two hours of birth, your colostrum changes to mature milk, that is also high in antibodies, and therefore continues to have a health-protection benefit.
* The literature shows that breastfed babies have decreased allergies, obesity, and ear infections, to name a few. As well, studies also reveal that they have higher I.Q.’s, and are less likely to die from S.I.D.S.
* Because breastmilk is always “on tap”, the temperature is always just right, and available when you need it to be. Breastmilk is also “smart”, so that it changes to meet the needs of your baby as he grows.
* Breastmilk is digested easier than formula is. This should result in less gas in your baby and consequently, a happier baby.
How breastfeeding benefits moms:
* It is less expensive to breastfeed than it is to buy formula.
* The convenience of breastfeeding allows you spend more time enjoying your baby or getting some much-needed rest, instead of wasting your time washing bottles and mixing formula!
* Studies indicate that there is a decreased chance of developing ovarian or pre-menopausal breast cancer. The longer you breastfeed, the greater are the benefits.
* The pregnancy pounds will come off naturally as you breastfeed, as your body is needing a lot of energy to produce milk for your baby.
* You will not have your period for several to many months. But do not be fooled into thinking that this means that you cannot conceive another baby at this time! You just never know when you might ovulate again!
* You may notice that when your baby suckles, that you experience cramps that are similar to those during menstruation. This is your uterus returning to its original size in your abdomen, and allows your body to get back into shape.
Lastly, let’s discuss some of the breastfeeding benefits for society:
* A breastfed baby will result in less trips to the emergency room or pediatrician for ear infections, asthma, and so forth. This results in less healthcare costs. Decreased chances of developing obesity and/or diabetes are also important, as these kinds of conditions can extend past childhood into adulthood.
* As people become more comfortable with and learn more about breastfeeding benefits, they are more likely to see its value and encourage and support mothers.
In conclusion, breastfeeding benefits are numerous. They are of benefit to the baby, mom, and to society. Breastfeeding is something that we want to promote to increase the understanding of its true benefits for all.
